2. Prepare Problems

Plan for problem solving by preparing problems to use in whole-class instruction.

Many math classrooms feature problem solving only occasionally, but the IES Panel recommends it be an integral part of all math curricular units, with time allocated for problem solving within classroom instruction rather than leaving it for practice or homework. Here the panel provides guidance for thoughtful preparation of problem-solving lessons. The panel encourages teachers to incorporate a variety of routine and non-routine problems and to ensure students have the language and math content knowledge necessary to solve the problems.
