Research shows that teaching students social skills and appropriate behavior can reduce problem behavior in the classroom and on school grounds. It is recommended that teachers actively teach students socially and behaviorally appropriate skills to replace problem behaviors. Teachers should employ strategies that focus both on individual students and the whole classroom. Teachers can help students learn how, when, and where to use these new skills. Infusing explicit instruction of positive behavior into the regular school day can reduce disruptive and aggressive behavior; such instruction may include conflict resolution skills, strategies to manage emotions and impulses, and effective interpersonal communication skills.
