6. Assist with College Entry

Help students and families understand and complete steps for college entry and financial aid.

High schools should provide direct assistance for students and parents at each step of the postsecondary education application and entry process. Beginning early in high school, knowledgeable school officials should offer one-on-one support regarding preparing for and taking admissions tests, searching for and selecting between colleges and other postsecondary education options that meet students' needs, and completing the application and enrollment process. Schools should also inform students of application deadlines and, when possible, assist with coordinating visits to colleges and other postsecondary education training programs.

High schools should also educate families about affordability, assist with obtaining fee waivers, and help to identify potential sources of aid. Students will benefit from help meeting financial aid deadlines and completing financial aid application forms.
