5. Organize Instruction

Provide engaging instruction tailored to students' needs, a part of out-of-school programs.

Effective instruction includes activities tailored to students' ability level and learning style. Additionally, engaging students in the learning process and sparking their interest can promote academic effort and achievement. Out-of-school programs can use formal and informal assessment results to determine students' learning needs and adapt academic instruction to include one-on-one tutoring or small group activities accordingly. Using real-world examples and linking instruction to students' interests and experiences is an effective way to spark students' interest in the subjects learned. Project-based, hands-on activities and cooperative learning are additional ways to engage students in the learning process. Professional development and coaching are critical to build staff capacity to effectively provide engaging and individualized instruction.
