4. Maximize Attendance

Maximize student participation and attendance.

To promote regular attendance, expanded learning time schools and out-of-school programs should identify and address factors that prevent students from attending regularly. Research has found that increased instructional time leads to better academic performance. To maximize attendance, expanded learning time schools and out-of-school program providers should set goals and monitor attendance. Out-of-school programs can minimize barriers to participation, such as transportation and operating hours. Promoting awareness of the out-of-school program benefits can promote enrollment and gain the support of school staff and parents in helping students attend the program. Expanded learning time schools can assign counseling services to chronically absent students and maintain close communication with parents and legal guardians.
