4. Female Role Models

Show students female role models to counter gender stereotypes.

When girls believe in gender stereotypes like "girls aren't good at math" or "science is for boys," they are likely to have low self-confidence or negative, distracting thoughts when being tested in science and math. Role models are vital to mitigating the effects of gender stereotypes. Often, it only takes a single positive role model to make a difference in a girl's academic life. Teachers can use a variety of strategies (e.g., reading about scientists, inviting female speakers, learning about role models, and collaborating with families) to help students learn about female role models.
